Francisco Costabal was born in Santiago, Chile. He is a Commercial Engineer from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and holds a diploma in Economic Sciences, as well as being a public accountant at the School of Economics and Administration of the same university. He holds an MBA in computer programs and information systems for the mining industry from the University of Kentucky, USA, as well as a Corporate Governance program – PGC from the University of Los Andes. Francisco Costabal began his professional career at the Huachipato Plant of Compañía de Acero del Pacífico and later in Santiago performing as Internal Auditor. During the years 1976 to 1979 he held various positions in the areas of Administration and Operations of Codelco Chile – División Andina. In 1979 he joined Sociedad Minera Pudahuel Ltda., Chile with the position of Comptroller where he later worked as Finance Manager in 1986 and as Sales and Finance Manager in 1988 for Pudahuel and La Cascada being promoted to General Manager of La Cascada. Lo Aguirre in 1991. In 1992 he accepted the position of Vice President of Marketing, Administration and Finance of Compañía Minera Cerro Colorado, Chile where he remained until 2001. After that period he was appointed President and General Manager of the same company in 2002. Two years Later, in September 2004, he joined Minera Spence SA, Chile as Vice President and General Manager and in February 2009 he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Minera Spence SA, a BHP Billiton Base Metals company. Later, in June 2010, he joined the senior management team in South America of Freeport-McMoRan Americas and was named Vice President of Business Development and Management in South America. Francisco Costabal was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Mining Council of Chile for five years, an association that brings together 17 mining companies of the Great Mining industry in Chile. Currently, he is the Treasurer of the Executive Committee of the same entity.
